What Happens Inside Writing With Friends?

There's always something happening in Writing With Friends, but you don't have to do everything. The idea isn't to fill your calendar. It's to give writing a regular place in your life, with a few extra opportunities to play, experiment and connect along the way.

I love the people, the accountability to my writing, and the opportunity to spend time doing something I love.

Three co-writing sessions every week

Three times a week, we write together online through our Safety in Numbers sessions.

You can come once, come every time, or drop in whenever your schedule allows. There's no expectation that you'll make every session.

We'll settle in, take a moment to get focused, and then write together. You don't have to share what you're working on, and nobody is going to ask how many words you wrote.

Just bring your writing and show up.

The Guided Write

Once a month, we gather for an hour of guided writing around a theme. I'll bring a series of prompts, you'll have plenty of time to write, and there's an opportunity to share at the end if you'd like.

The time changes from month to month so that members in different time zones have a chance to join us.

Every session is different, but the intention is always the same: give yourself an hour to play with words and see what happens.

A growing writing resource library

Members have access to a growing collection of writing prompts, lessons, exercises and other resources from Open Sky Stories.

There's no curriculum to follow and no expectation that you work your way through everything. It's simply a library you can dip into whenever you need a little inspiration, direction or something new to try.

A private community space

Writing With Friends also has a private community on Mighty Networks where members can connect between writing sessions.

It's a place to talk about books, share what you're working on, celebrate writing wins, ask questions, and get to know the other people in the group.

You don't have to be active there to be part of Writing With Friends. The weekly writing sessions and monthly activities don't depend on being in the community.

A Little Extra: Monthly Member Discounts

Each month, members receive a special discount on something from Open Sky Stories.

It might be a workshop, a writing resource, a service, or something just for fun. It's my way of giving members a little something extra each month.

Seasonal community writing projects

From time to time, we'll take a shared prompt and see what happens when a whole group of writers responds to it.

These seasonal projects give us a chance to make something together. We might create a little collection of our writing, put together a zine, or try something entirely different.

You can participate as much or as little as you like.

And sometimes…

There might be something in the mail. A special writing event. A seasonal invitation. Or some other little surprise.

You don't have to keep up with any of it.

They're invitations, not assignments.

There's a little bit of magic in our writing sessions.

Every Safety in Numbers session ends the same way: we each add one line from what we've written to the chat.

It might be a sentence from a story, a line of poetry, a few words from a journal entry, or something we don't quite know what to do with yet. Then we read all the lines aloud, one after another, in the order they appeared.

We never know what we're going to create — and somehow, it always feels a little magical.

At the end of every month, I collect all the lines into a document and send them to the group. Members use them as prompts for future writing, turn them into erasure or cento poems, or simply keep them as a record of what we made together.

Individual writing becomes something collective.

Why write with other people?

Because knowing someone else is showing up can make it much easier to show up yourself.

Writing With Friends gives you accountability without pressure. Nobody is tracking your word count or asking whether you've hit your goals. You simply have a regular place to put writing time on the calendar — and people there waiting to write alongside you.

And over time, something else happens: you get to know your writing people. You encourage each other, talk about books, celebrate progress, share ideas and become part of a community that understands why you keep coming back to the page.

You don't have to write alone.

It’s like joining a group of friends whenever I sign in.
Erica creates such a warm, friendly, and supportive space.
  • You want to write more regularly but struggle to make time for it.

  • You work better when other people are around.

  • You want writing accountability without a rigid program.

  • You're looking for an online writing community, not another course.

  • You want encouragement and connection without having to share or critique your work.

  • You have a writing project — or simply want writing to become a regular part of your life.

You don't need a finished manuscript, a writing routine, or even a plan. You just need something you want to write.

You might belong here if…

What this isn’t…

  • It's not a writing class. You aren't expected to learn a lesson every time you show up.

  • It's not a critique group. You don't have to share your work or give feedback.

  • It's not a productivity challenge. Nobody is tracking your word count.

It's simply a place to write with other people and a safe space to explore another creative outlet.

And then there are the people…

Writing with Friends is a group of intelligent people who bring expertise, knowledge and a whole lot of information while also providing comfort and friendship.

This might actually be the best part. Writing With Friends is a community of people who love words, stories, ideas and making things. As one member put it:

“I have made so many new friends and got a lot of writing done too!”
